SCREENPRINTING

How Screen Printing Works for Business Apparel (And What to Expect)

Blue Dolphin Screen Print & Embroidery helps businesses, teams, and organizations produce custom printed apparel from its Somersworth, New Hampshire facility. This guide explains how screen printing works for business apparel, what affects pricing and turnaround time, and when screen printing is the right choice for your project.

What customers value in screen printing

Consistency and Brand Integrity: The process ensures uniform results across hundreds or thousands of items, which is critical for maintaining brand standards and precise details.

• Clear timeline: predictable phases (process order→ proof → print → quality check).

• Cost-Effective for Bulk Orders: While initial setup (creating screens) can be a complicated process, screen printing is highly economical for large production runs because the cost-per-unit decreases as quantity increases.

• Specialty Inks and Effects: Screen printing can support specialty inks and effects such as metallic, glitter, glow, and textured finishes.

Let's Get Started!

1) What is screen printing—and is it right for my order?

Screen printing applies ink to a garment by pushing it through a fine mesh screen (a stencil) onto fabric. Each color in your design uses its own screen, which is why screen printing produces bold, clean logos and consistent results.

When screen printing is the best choice

  • You’re ordering for a crew, staff, or team (not one or two shirts)
  • You need consistent reorders (same logo, same placement, same colors)
  • You want durability for regular wear and washing

When you may want a different method

  • You need very small quantities
  • Your order is a rush with a tight deadline
  • Your design is a photo or consists of many colors
  • Every shirt needs unique names/numbers or individual personalization

Not sure which method fits?  Just fill out the form above to get started, and we’ll recommend the option that best fits your project.

2) What does the ordering process look like?

A smooth screen printing order follows a predictable path: artwork review, garment selection, quote approval, order confirmation, proof approval, production, quality check, then pickup or delivery. The goal is to remove guesswork so you’re never wondering what happens next.

  1. Artwork review: Confirm sizing, placement, and color breakdown. Flag any file issues early.

  2. Garment selection: Choose the right shirts/hoodies/workwear for how they’ll be used.

  3. Quote approval: We'll send you a quote based on your garment choice and project details.

  4. Order confirmation:  Once the quote is approved, we will process your order and send you a confirmation for your records.

  5. Proof approval:  Our art department will send you a proof within 2-3 business days, which you will have the option to approve or decline and request changes.

  6. Production: Screens are created per color; ink is printed and cured for durability.

  7. Quality check: Counts and print quality are verified before the order leaves the shop.

Tip: The fastest way to keep your timeline on track is to approve the proof quickly and confirm garment sizes/quantities up front.

3) Minimums, pricing drivers, and what actually affects cost

Screen printing requires setup time for each color and design. Screen printing requires setup time for each design and ink color, so most orders have minimum quantities. After setup is complete, larger runs become more cost-effective.

What impacts price most

  • Number of ink colors: More colors = more screens and setup time.
  • Print locations: Front-only vs. front + back vs. sleeve prints.
  • Garment type: Tees, hoodies, workwear, performance fabrics, etc.
  • Quantity: Higher quantities typically lower the per-piece cost.

If you’re comparing quotes, make sure you’re comparing the same garment brand/style, print locations, and color count. That’s where costs usually shift.

4) Turnaround times (and how rush orders work)

Production timelines start after proof approval. Order size, garment availability, and shop schedule all influence timing, so the best approach is to confirm the deadline early and approve your proof promptly.

How to avoid timeline surprises

  • Send your artwork files early (vector files, ideally)
  • Confirm garment style and availability before finalizing the timeline
  • Approve proofs quickly to keep your spot on the production schedule
  • If your deadline is fixed, let us know immediately so we can plan accordingly

Rush production: Sometimes possible, depending on schedule and garment availability. Rush feasibility is confirmed after artwork review and garment selection.

5) Durability: will screen printing crack, peel, or fade?

When ink is printed and cured correctly, screen prints hold up well through regular wear and washing. For businesses and teams, this is a big reason screen printing remains the go-to for consistent, long-lasting logos.

Simple care tips to extend print life

  • Wash inside out when possible
  • Use normal settings; avoid extreme heat
  • Skip high-heat drying when you can

If your apparel will see heavy-duty use (construction, HVAC, roofing, landscaping), mention that up front so garment choice and ink approach match the job.

6) Reorders: how to keep everything consistent

Reorders are easy because we save all your specs —logo size, placement, ink colors, and garment details. That’s how you get a second (and tenth) order that matches the first without re-explaining everything.

What consistency looks like in practice

  • Same logo size and placement
  • Same ink colors (or intentional updates)
  • Same garment style—or a clearly chosen replacement
  • Less back-and-forth for repeat orders

7) When screen printing isn’t the best fit

Screen printing isn’t perfect for every project. If you need very small runs, photo-detail designs, or individual personalization on each garment, another method can be a smarter choice.

  • Very small quantities: setup makes per-piece cost higher
  • Photo-detail / gradients: digital methods may reproduce detail better
  • One-off personalization: names/numbers often work better with other processes

The goal is the right method for the outcome you want—not forcing a process that doesn’t match the job.
